I’ve heard of church mice but not church gerbils. That is, until now.

Four gorgeous gerbils were left in a Church in Surbiton. Fortunately they were spotted and given to the RSPCA. All four are male and the RSPCA would like to home them as two pairs. Basil and Bobbie live together (both white) and Blake (grey) and Bruno (white) live together.

In the wild, gerbils live in underground tunnels up to 3m long with several entries and chambers. If kept as a pet, the best way to mimic this is to house them in a large tank or old aquarium with a secure wire lid.

Gerbils love to dig and burrow so you need to make sure they have enough bedding to do this to their hearts content. They have enormous fun with cardboard tubes – chewing them and running through them. They like
fruit tree branches to climb on and, if you put a flat rock in the tank, they may use it as a lookout point. The RSPCA say that these four do love to see what is going on around them.

They can be fast movers so children should only handle gerbils under adult supervision as they can find it difficult to hold them without squeezing them too hard. If you are interested in homing a pair, contact Hillingdon RSPCA on 01895 833 417.

Talking of fast movers, The Mayhew Animal Home has spare places for anyone who would like to take part in the British 10K run which takes place on 8th July. The route goes past some of London’s most iconic landmarks such as Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Twenty five thousand runners are expected to take part. Online entries for this event have sold out but The Mayhew still has some spare places. If you would like to run in aid of The Mayhew, more details are available from 020 8968 2445.

Don’t forget Dogs Trust have a Summer Fun Day this Sunday (10th June) from 11am-4pm. It takes place at
Harvil Rd, Harefield UB9 6JW.
