Take a close look at this dog. Yes, you can see a wound where a rope had become embedded in his neck. The wound was caused by this beautiful dog trying to break free after he was tied up and abandoned.

Fortunately, although emaciated, the dog – now called Denzil - was found in time and is now in the care of Dogs Trust.

I met Denzil, at Dogs Trust at Harefield today and, despite what he has been through, he is a lovely, friendly
boy.

Although Denzil was abandoned in Ireland, there is no room for thinking it wouldn’t happen here. On May 1 st,
Inspector Beaman, the RSPCA Inspector for our area of London, was called to a dog who had been tied to a
tree and abandoned. He was soaked to the skin as it had been raining overnight.

I would assume the people who abandon animals like this, are not the same people who read this column
but, if you have a pet dog who you really cannot look after any more and you are at a loss to know what to
do, contact Dogs Trust on 01895 453 930.

There is likely to be a waiting list for them to take your pet in but they will give you advice and support while
you wait.

You can also contact other animal welfare charities such as Battersea Dogs and Cats Home (0207 627 9218
for dogs or 0207 627 9308 for cats) or the Mayhew Animal Home (020 8969 0178). You can also go to
www.rspca.org.uk and type – giving up an animal – into the search box.

Meanwhile, back to Denzil. He is a young, black and tan lurcher. Since being in the care of Dogs Trust,
he has learnt basic commands. He is a clever boy and could easily learn more. One of the advantages
of choosing a dog from Dogs Trust is that you then become eligible to attend the training classes for dogs
homed from their centres. If you are able to offer Denzil a home, contact Dogs Trust on 01895 453 930 or
