Nicholas De Mattos (Letters, October 16) argues for a new airport in the Thames estuary.

The Heath Government argued for the Foulness proposal but then backed off on grounds of cost.

No Government would want to spend taxpayers' money on such a gargantuan project. Even the nimbies amongst us would have to fork out.

I have long had a thing about Manston, that iconic Battle of Britain aerodrome. Biggin Hill is another.

There are rail and road links with both that are problematic. Both are serviceable and working airports.

Of course, one or both would have to be plugged in better. For the moment they will subsist on general aviation.

My money is on Stansted. It will be well linked to Crossrail.

However, we out west must not forget that our airport is truly world class.

And the residents will always choose it in preference to other airports, especially now that T5 is up and running. I will need some convincing about the third runway.

Boris should wind his neck back and stop thinking about huge infrastructural development. We have loads of airport space in the South East already.
