A GARDENER got more than he bargained for when he dug up an unexploded bomb on Saturday morning (July 27).
Allotments in Gainsborough Gardens, Isleworth, and some nearby houses had to be evacuated after the surprise find just after 11am.
Bomb disposal experts were called in to remove the shell, which is believed to have been a live round.
The gardener had been digging in his plot at the allotments, near Mogden sewage works, when he discovered what is thought to have been an anti-aircraft shell from the Second World War.
A police spokeswoman said the shell was about five inches long, by two inches wide, and was old and rusty.
She added that a cordon was put in place and some houses evacuated as a precaution before bomb disposal experts removed the shell.
