IN YEARS of struggle against things that people want to do to us but cannot be allowed to get away with, how often have I heard the discouraging comment that I was wasting my time and that it would happen anyway.

This mysterious 'they' who rule our lives are omnipotent. There is no way that mere mortals like you and I can influence them in the slightest way.

This is defeatist talk and it is not true. I have, either alone or combined with others, often succeeded in changing the course of events. However, by far the biggest example of this is Heathrow runway three. Very

many of us fought this for years and we were forever being told that we were wasting our time. Well, we won! I am reluctant to mention the names of key players in this struggle. There were too many and to mention any names at all is almost certain to offend somebody.

My own part was the odd letter to local papers, often with my rather weird sense of humour helping me along. Perhaps the best example of this was the time when I reacted to proposals to put the M4 underground by proposing that it might be better to do this to Heathrow Airport.

If I was to mention anybody as playing a key role in this struggle it would have to be John Stewart of HACAN/Clearskies. His endless energy and grasp of the issues involved was invaluable in achieving this victory. After this huge victory it is tempting to lie back for a while.

This would be a mistake as the battle against airport expansion has not led to total success yet.

There remain the issues of runway alternation and night flights. For us in Feltham, Airtrack and its plans to gridlock our town with permanently closed level crossings remains a huge issue. However, do not let anybody tell

you we cannot win this one as well. What we have done we can do again!
