DETECTIVES have launched a murder investigation after a man from Acton died soon after being found unconscious in a cemetery.

The victim was named today (25) by police as Peter Charles John of East Acton Lane.

The 54-year-old was found with a neck injury in the City of London Cemetery in Newham, East London.

He was flown by the air ambulance to a hospital soon after he was found, at about 2.15pm on Wednesday (23), where he later died.

Today, neighbours of Mr John described him as friendly and helpful, and said they were shocked at his sudden death.
One young mother said: “It's sad. He was always polite and a very nice man, he was a nice guy. We used to see him coming in and out, he'd say hello to the kids. It's very sad that he's dead.”

Another neighbour said: “He was a kind person, he was always kind to me and would help me whenever I needed anything. We are all shocked.”
Neighbours were seen visiting Mr John's home to pay condolences to a family member. A police family liaison officer was present.

A post mortem is yet to be held and officers say they are keeping an open mind over the motive.

Detective chief inspector Chris Jones, of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command is leading the investigation.
