A REDESIGN of Acton town centre is planned to cut traffic jams and make the streets safer.

The council has received £167,000 from Transport for London to carry out the work on Uxbridge Road and Acton High Street, from the junction with Twyford Crescent in the west to the junction with Birbeck Road in the east.

The most dramatic changes include the introduction of a roundabout at Horn Lane, replacing the traffic lights, and mini-roundabouts replacing both the traffic lights at Church Road and the right turn filter lane at Acton Lane.

A speed table - a raised section of road wider than a speed bump - would also be installed near the bingo hall.

A right turn ban from Uxbridge Road into Gunnersbury Lane and a left turn ban from Gunnersbury Lane into Uxbridge Road would be introduced, and some pedestrian crossings will be added or moved to improve pedestrian safety.

More minor changes include bus stops being relocated to try to reduce queues and to equal out spacing between them, footpaths widened and some loading and parking bays introduced.

Transport leader Bassam Mahfouz said: "We were elected on a platform for tackling congestion hotspots and making our roads safer.

"We're looking forward to delivering some important changes in Acton High Street and dealing with these long-standing congestion problems."

He gave the example of the mini-roundabout recently installed outside Acton Town tube station which he said had reduced queues and journey times.

The work will be further to improvements to The Mount, including artwork and better lighting, due to be carried out following a £500,000 grant from the Greater London Authority's Outer London Fund.
