A MOHICAN-STYLE haircut is at the centre of a row between a Shepherd's Bush parent and Burlington Danes Academy.

Last week 13-year-old Kaine Marren was told he must get a haircut after he turned up to the Wood Lane school sporting the unique hairstyle.

He was told he would be taken out of his normal class and placed into a smaller one if the request was refused.

Outraged, Kaine's mother Annie, 49, decided to remove her son from the school as she did not feel it was fair that her son be isolated from other students, especially when she claims he has had the haircut for the past two years.

She said: "It is a grade three Mohican haircut with a tail at the back of his neck. This is not the first time this child has had the haircut, and he's been at the school since Year 7 and he's now in Year 9. I don't see why he should have to be taken out of his class for this. He has this type of haircut quite often and they've never said anything before. When my son is in the wrong I'll put my size six shoe up his backside, but he's being punished for something he hasn't done. I'm responsible for him and he shouldn't be punished for my actions."

The academy has enjoyed a remarkable turnaround since it was placed in special measures seven years ago and last month David Cameron praised them during a major education speech as he opened the new Norwich Free School.

The school claims that this is the first time they've seen Kaine with this type of haircut and that he must adhere to the school rules which state that hair must be the same length all over.

A spokesperson for the school, said: "The child is welcome back at school, we want to see him back, he just needs a quick trim. As a sign of good faith we've offered to pay for the haircut but the school rules clearly say that the hair has to be the same length all over. We want to get him back in class as quickly as possible."
