An armed robber nicknamed the 'Skull Cracker' is believed to have been spotted in Twickenham yesterday after absconding from an open prison.

Michael Wheatley, 55, was released on temporary licence from HMP Standford Hill in Kent on Saturday, May 3, but has failed to return.

The Met Police received a call at 7.55pm last night about a suspected sighting at an address in Twickenham.

A Met spokeswoman said: "Officers conducted a search but he wasn't there. We continue to work closely with Kent Police."

Wheatley was given 13 life sentences at the Old Bailey in 2002 for a series of bank robberies. He earned his nickname for using a fake gun as a weapon to hit people, including a 73-year-old woman, during the raids.

Kent Police said Wheatley, originally from east London, has links across south-east England.

Anyone with information is asked to call 999 immediately and not to approach Wheatley.
