Major traffic jams were caused throughout Hammersmith and Fulham after a fatal crash closed the A4 during yesterday's rush hour.

A tipper truck travelling out of London crossed the central reservation just after passing Chiswick House, colliding with a black taxi and seriously injuring one of three male passengers, who died later in hospital.

The A4 was closed for several hours in both directions following the crash, which happened just after 4pm near the junction with Sutton Court Road, Chiswick.

The taxi driver and two other passengers were described as 'walking wounded' and were taken to Charing Cross Hospital. The truck driver suffered shock and was taken to a separate hospital.

Long delays were caused on key routes through Hammersmith and Fulham while investigations were carried out, with gridlocked traffic on Fulham Palace Road and North End Road until late in the evening.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on the victim, who is yet to be identified.

Officers from the road death investigation unit at Hampton are looking into the crash and are urging any witnesses to call them on 020 8941 9011.
