OUR thoughts are with the friends and family of 35-year-old Scott

Williams who died in such tragic circumstances over the weekend.

He was clearly a popular figure in the community and was highly regarded by fellow teachers at his former school.

It is always tragic to see the death of someone so young who has clear promise, but the nature of his death will be particularly hard to take for those close to him.

Irrespective of how he came to be asleep in the bin, checks should have been made by staff before it was emptied.

As residents in Harrow will know only too well, stringent checks in this borough are always made to ensure that no contaminated waste affects recycling - so why weren't similar precautions taken in Brighton?

Why should someone's untimely death be the instigation for such a process?

Caretakers' selfless act

THE heroic caretakers who broke their way into a blazing building to save the lives of three young children must be applauded for their selflessness.

More and more we are told that people don't care about those in their communities or that they are quick to turn a blind eye in situations of peril.

But this duo proved that not everyone is so callous.

They had no idea what faced them on the other side of that door, yet they were both willing to put their own lives in danger.
