I concur with Dr Joyce that nobody trusts the crime figures produced by the Home Office ['Police should get new station', letters, January 15].

Locally the Harrow Crime Prevention Panel (HCPP) has been arguing that the statistical information is only one input indicator - and a rather subjective one - in arriving at the overall crime picture.

Effective measures to tackle and prevent crime heavily depend on the quality as well as the availability of the information.

Forming a more credible crime profile is possible by taking into account the crime-related information gained and the victim's perception of crime gleaned by the community organisations like the HCPP and Victim Support.

It is rather unfortunate that the local police seem to be more comfortable in dealing with few selective 'partners'!

This is worrying.
