A NURSING home resident had to be rescued after a blaze broke out in the middle of the night in a ground floor bedroom.

The male smoke inhalation victim was helped by firefighters called to Wilsmere House Care Centre,  run by Barchester Healthcare in the cul-de-sac of Wilsmere Drive, Harrow Weald, at 3.30am.

Nine other people with mobility issues were led from the 85-room three-storey detached building and no other injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Stanmore, Harrow, Wembley, and Mill Hill Fire Stations took 35 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Wilsmere House Care Centre accommodates a mix of mainly young adults, who have neurological conditions and brain and spinal injuries, and older residents.

Just hours after the end of the incident, firefighters went on strike between 6.30am and 8.30am.
