LONG-AWAITED work to regenerate Hounslow High Street will start in October, the council has announced.

The shopping parade will be re-paved, new seats will be installed and trees will be planted as part of a £2.75 million project largely funded by the Mayor of London.

Two new event spaces - one at the west end of the street, by Bell Corner, and the other outside Holy Trinity Church - will be created to host open-air performances.

Lampposts will also be removed and replaced with lights attached to buildings in a bid to 'declutter' the high street and make it more pedestrian friendly.

Councillor Steve Curran, Hounslow's cabinet member for regeneration, said: "The renewal of Hounslow High Street marks the start of an era of opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs, residents and visitors to Hounslow.

"It's about creating an environment which will boost shops and businesses and make the town centre a place where people want to be and somewhere we are all proud of.

"We will do our best to minimise inconvenience to public businesses and residents, and all premises entered from Bell Square and High Street will remain accessible during construction."

The work, originally scheduled to begin in April, will be carried out by council contractor Hounslow Highways and will take place in two phases.

Work on the new square at Bell Corner is due to begin at the start of October and be completed by Christmas, with improvements to the pedestrianised part of the high street due to begin in the new year.
