HILLINGDON Council has asked for a £2.4million grant from Transport for London (TfL ) to revitalise Yiewsley and West Drayton.

But other areas of the borough do not fare so well, with projects being delayed or amended because of a £1m cut in the council's funding for travel improvements.

The TfL cash would allow the council to carry out aesthetic improvements to Yiewsley and West Drayton, some suggested by residents.

These would include an illuminated arch on Colham Bridge, which crosses the Grand Union Canal and marks the transition from Yiewsley to West Drayton.

The installation is the brainchild of the Yiewsley and West Drayton Town Action Group, and architect Harvey Vasey, who runs the web-site www.ub7.org.

Another possible project is refurbishment of the rail bridge in Station Road, West Drayton, with artwork and better lighting.

Anita MacDonald, Labour councillor for West Drayton, said: "Everybody is really keen on the improvements.

"They have been created by residents with a really good eye for design, and the idea is to bring more people into the towns."

Other projects scheduled for the financial year 2011/12 have suffered.

A £60,000 interchange scheme for Hayes station has been deferred, to allow for a link with the Crossrail works; £62,000 worth of improvements at Hillingdon Circus have been cut to £30,000; and a £130,000 project for improved pedestrian access between bus stops in Uxbridge Road has also been trimmed to £94,000.

A cycle route in West Drayton, along Station Road and Harmondsworth Road, planned for 2012/13 at a cost of £50,000, has been axed.
