AN £18M new sports centre could arrive in Brent if plans proposed by Westminster Council are given the green light.
The neighbouring local authority has announced plans to create a new improved sports centre by merging the existing Jubilee Sports Centre, Caird Street, Westminster and the Moberly Sports Centre in Kilburn Lane, Brent.
The scheme would involve redeveloping the Moberly Sports Centre, and therefore revolutionising leisure services in Queen's Park and the surrounding area.
A Brent Council spokesman said the development would come at no extra cost to the tax payer because it would be funded by the sale of new residential properties at both sides of the new centre.
The council added: "Subject to planning permission, the new centre will include more facilities than both Jubilee and Moberly combined, including a new swimming pool and dedicated learner pool, an eight-court sports hall, health and fitness suite, exercise and dance studios, a multi-use gymnastics and martial arts area and new boxing provision."
Facilities for community group use will also be provided on site.
Councillor James Powney, Brent Council's lead member for environment and neighbourhoods, said: "I am delighted to see such a big investment in a sports centre in Brent. We know our residents would especially welcome a new swimming pool, but the other facilities will also be a great enhancement to the borough."
The Westminster based Jubilee Sports Centre would remain fully open whilst the Moberly site is being redeveloped if approval for the plans is given.
The Jubilee centre would then close in May 2014 and all users and activities will then move into the new Moberly centre.
Residents can find out more about the proposals by attending a drop-in session at the Moberly Sports Centre on April 16 from 12.30 to 2pm and from 6.30pm to 8pm.
Residents are invited to submit their feedback on the redevelopment plans by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org by May 31 or visiting www.westminster.gov.uk/newmoberly for more information.
