A TOTAL of 1,500 jobseekers applied for just 183 vacancies at the new Tesco superstore set to open next month.

The new Tesco, just off the High Street on Trout Road, Yiewsley, received an average of more than eight applications for each new job.

The store is set to replace the Tesco Metro on Fairfield Road, which will close on Sunday April 10. All staff members from the Metro were offered positions at the new superstore, with the vast majority transferring.

The new store due to open for the first time on Monday April 11, well in time for Easter, will have a total of 255 employees.

Rob Baines, store manager, worked closely with Heathrow Job Centre and Reed Consultancy to help find staff, also advertising in their Hayes store.

Mr Baines said: "We were overwhelmed by not only the number of applications but also the quality. As a result of this my team and I felt that it was important to meet with, as may applicants as possible."

The superstore interviewed 1,000 people in little over two-weeks, some of who were long term unemployed.

"We have also been able to offer a number of positions to job seekers who have been out of work for over 6 months. Given this current time of economic uncertainty, it is great that we are able to create jobs and help get people back into work."
