I AM stepping down this week after 15 years as the borough's representative in the European Parliament.

A former Hounslow Primary School teacher, I was first elected as an MEP in 1994. Since 1999 I have been the most active of the London-wide members. I am particularly known for campaigning on education, transport and South Asia issues.

It will be sad to leave the European Parliament as it has been a great honour to serve.

However I will continue to work for the Labour Party and to campaign at every level.

I have always been at the forefront of providing information about the Parliament. As a former teacher I have also visited over 500 schools in just about every one of London's 32 boroughs.

Of my achievements in the Parliament I am most proud of having steered through the new law which makes it illegal for airlines to discriminate against any passenger because of a disability.

Hundreds of thousands of elderly and disabled travellers, in every one of the 27 EU countries, is better looked after when flying, thanks to this regulation.

In 15 years I reckon I have clocked up more than one million kilometres in travelling and been away from home for the equivalent of five years!
