A campaign group was forced to rearrange a planned rally in support of under-fire Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in Ealing.

Momentum had planned to hold a rally at Ealing Town Hall on Tuesday (July 19), with either Mr Corbyn or Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell in attendance.

But the group was informed this week by Ealing Council that the hall was fully booked.

Momentum has instead rearranged for Tuesday (July 19) at St Matthew's Church in Ealing Common, where Mr McDonnell will attend.

Meeting organiser Raj Gill claimed the initial decision was aimed at sabotaging the meeting due to council leader Julian Bell's opposition of Mr Corbyn, and that his team had been told the cancellation was on "health and safety" grounds due to the number of people expected to attend.

He pointed out that a similar meeting featuring a speech by Mr Corbyn before he was elected leader, and attracting hundreds of people, had taken place in 2015 with no problems.

A council spokesperson said: "We could not accommodate Momentum on their chosen date because the request was last minute and the venue is busy with a number of other events already being held on that evening, but we’ve offered them 11 alternative dates."

Mr Corbyn is under pressure after a wave of Labour MPs resigned from the front bench and shadow cabinet, after Britain voted to leave the EU on June 23.

On Tuesday (July 12) the party's National Executive Committee ruled that Mr Corbyn's name must be on the leadership ballot, meaning he will not need the support of 51 MPs to run in the election.
