It is clearly a hero time of year!

Hard on the heels of the Gazette and Uxbridge College opening nominations for their Local Heroes Awards 2014, Hillingdon Council has named its sporting heroes.

The Mayor’s Awards for Sporting Achievement were awarded in the Middlesex suite at Hillingdon Civic Centre, Uxbridge. Prizes were handed out by Councillor Allan Kauffman, the Mayor of Hillingdon.

Louise Butler, winner of Young Volunteer of the Year, said: "When I won the award it felt amazing. It felt like I had achieved something.

"Volunteering is something that I enjoy and will continue to do so ... to progress my knowledge and to help the community even more and get more people involved in sports."

Leanne Parkinson, captain of Eastcote hockey club's women's first team, the winner of the Team of the Year, said:

"This award is well-deserved recognition for the efforts of our squad members and coach Adam Mulholland, in not only achieving success as a team on the pitch, but in helping to develop the hockey players of the future through our youth set-up."

The Hillingdon Gold bursary, which helps an elite sportsman or woman from the borough to compete at an international level, was  awarded to Namatullah Ahmadi, an 18-year-old weightlifter from Hayes who took up the sport three years ago.

He is British number one for his age and recently set a new British under-18s weightlifting record last year of 117kg.

He will receive £5,000 to help him in his training for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
