Walking to work and burning off calories instead of braving the Undergound may actually have great health benefits, according to this newly published walking Tube map.

Following the recent Tube strike, Dr Wayne Osborne, head practitioner at Treated - an online healthcare service - had the idea to put a walking map together to encourage Londoners to walk and get a healthier lifestyle.

The map details the estimated number of calories you can burn if you decide to walk the distance rather than take the Tube.

The calorie count between each station was calculated using Google Maps to determine the walking duration for each leg; and using the calorie burn formula for a person of UK average weight (11 stone) walking at an average speed of three miles per hour, that's 3.84 calories per minute.

The map has revealed some interesting findings. For instance, many of the inner city stops are about two minutes apart on the Tube line, but around 10-15 minutes walking distance.

When you consider that waiting for up to five minutes for a train is often a common occurrence, the time difference is quite slim.

Dr Wayne Osborne said: “In the outer regions of the city, the Tube makes a big difference to travel times. But it’s when you get deeper into the centre that the difference between getting the Tube and walking or jogging, in terms of time, starts to significantly narrow.”

The Circle line had on average the shortest distance between stops, with 12 walking minutes for each of its 34 stops.

The Waterloo & City line, with just two stops and a 32-minute walk separating them, is technically the least walkable on average.

But the Metropolitan line, which is a much longer line with 32 stops, had the next longest average minute count between stops with 28.4.

Osborne concluded: "If you want an economical way to get in shape, and lower your risk of serious illness, then hopping off the tube one or two stops early and walking the rest of the way is a great way to keep fit and burn off some extra calories.

"And it isn’t going to bite that much more into your day than getting the tube normally would."
