A FATHER claims his autistic son’s health is being put at risk by controversial new school transport arrangements.

Aqib Ahmed, who attends Lindon Bennett School, in Hanworth, used to be picked up and dropped off at his door by a council-funded bus.

Since September, however, the 10-year-old has had to wait for the bus in Heston Road, opposite the Shell petrol station, a short walk away from his home in Old Cote Drive, Heston.

The change is part of a shift in policy cash-strapped Hounslow Council claims will save £100,000 a year, but which has angered many parents.

Aqib’s father Asif, who works as a carer for the council, said he was worried about the impact on his son’s health.

“Aqib’s got a weak immune system and catches viruses very easily, so I’m worried about him waiting in the cold, with no shelter. He’s already developed a nasty cough in the last few days,” he told the Chronicle.

“My wife and I are both carers and we can’t afford to be late for work if the bus doesn’t arrive on time, which has happened on a few occasions.

“We lodged an appeal back in September and sent a letter from Aqib’s doctor supporting our case, but we have yet to hear anything back. It’s pathetic if you ask me.”

The Chronicle reported earlier this month how three families are taking the council to court over the changes, which affect up to 600 children with special needs across the borough.

The council is already believed to have reversed more than 60 changes to school transport arrangements after appeals and Chiswick-based charity Parents in Touch has criticised the way the new policy has been implemented.

A council spokesman said: “We are not able to comment on the specifics of an individual case. If any parent or carer wishes to raise any issues with regard to the travel arrangements for their child, then they need to contact the travel assessor in writing at Children’s Services at the Civic Centre.

“Hounslow Council remains committed to ensuring that children who need assistance to enable them to get to school are able to receive it.”
