Cardboard and plastic bottles were turned into works of art when children created models in celebration of Earth Day 2014.

Pupils of all classes at Gifford Primary in Greenhill Gardens, Northolt, put on an eco-art exhibition on Friday last week (April 25) with models they had made in groups as part of a competition.

The idea was to raise awareness of recycling at home as well as at school. Staff and children took in boxes, plastic bottles and other packaging materials for recycling.

Designs were displayed in the hall and headteacher Nigel Cook selected a piece called Funderfair as the winning entry – a funfair constructed by a group of six year three students.

The school’s eco co-ordinator and high level teaching assistant, Jill Everall, said: “We have stepped up our recycling, are going to be composting the school’s waste, and were given the silver award for Eco Schools before Easter.”

Earth Day, which is marked around the world, was on Tuesday last week (April 22). It aims to raise awareness that humans have a collective responsibility to look after the planet’s ecosystem and to balance their economic, social and environmental needs.
