It's a well-known fact that housing in London is vastly more expensive than anywhere else in the UK.

£1,000 a month in the capital will get you a tiny studio bedsit with a cooker and desk within touching distance of a single bed - if you're lucky.

But for the same price elsewhere in the UK, you get luxury penthouses, period cottages, huge family homes and even a six-bed farmhouse!

Trinity Mirror's specialist data unit has done some research into rental cost in the £900 to £1,000-a-month price bracket, comparing lettings in London with other postcodes in the UK.

In the capital, near South Kensington, for £953 a month, you could have a compact bedsit.

Alternatively, you could rent a garage in Barnes for a cool £950 a month.

Compare this with other major cities in Britain such as Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle.

For instance, if you wanted to live in the heart of Birmingham, £1,000 a month would get you a two-bedroom loft apartment in the city's swanky jewellery quarter.

In Liverpool, for £995, you could have a two-bed apartment in the city centre's West Tower, with views across the city.

Or, if you're looking for something a bit different, you could rent a farmhouse in Allandale, Northumberland, for £1,000 a month, giving you six bedrooms, your own outbuildings and views over your gardens and grounds.

That's plenty of food for thought while you're lying in your bedsit in Kensington...
