Every year we have the same goals or resolutions but it never seems to be the right time, maybe next year though!

The truth is you can’t predict the future, you don’t know when the perfect time is, as life will always throw a curve ball. Never being in the right time is a good excuse as it’s something that everyone can comprehend and accept as getting in the way of your grand plans.

However the real reason tends to be much deeper, there is usually a lack of confidence or the fear of taking a journey towards the unknown. This is perfectly normal, why would you want to pursue something when you can stay in a comfortable place right now. Then again if you were truly comfortable with your life, there wouldn’t be a resolution or desire for something bigger.

It’s best to start with why, why is this New Year’s resolution important to me? What would it mean for me to achieve it? The very idea that your resolution may present a challenge is something that should be embraced. If you look deeper into the phrase ‘Happy New Year’, it could be interpreted as saying good luck for 2015, may this be the year that you achieve your goals, bringing you a step closer to happiness. The year changes but it doesn’t automatically mean that you will too, that is up to you to decide (you might realise this come mid Jan when things are ‘back to normal’).

So what do we do?

As Martin Luther king said: "You don’t need to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." Well you need to have a plan or at least one foot on the first step of that ‘staircase’. That way you can start the New Year not only with a plan but a step towards progress. The most natural thing to do at that point would be to carry on with that progress, so it would hopefully be an easier transition.

For example if your plan is to get fit or lose a few pounds (now I have your attention, ey?) then the first step might be to see what facilities the local gyms or leisure centres has. Are you looking for just a gym or a place with various facilities such as a swimming pool, a rock climbing area or tennis courts? It might be a good idea to check different places out so you can get a good feel of them, if you don’t feel that confident then it could be useful to ask a friend to come along for support. If you’re pressed for time use the internet to check out places nearby or exercise classes/groups that you might be interested in.

There is always a solution, instead of asking what am I going to do about this problem, ask yourself what would make this situation easier (or more comfortable) to handle. (i.e. support, new running shoes or guidance/ gym induction from a personal trainer?) During this process focus on the positive, look for solutions not problems.

Once you take that first step, the second will soon be in sight. The journey begins with you, the scene for 2015 is slowly being set but its progress relies on the action you take.

Good luck and Happy New Year!
