We all have our own reasons for undertaking some form of physical training however more often than not the reasoning behind the need for a physical change stems from a deeper psychological need that we are trying to deal with.

So, do we exercise because we want to feel good or look great? Well, i guess the answer to that is both isn't it? It all begins in the brain though; that's where we first think: "I should get some exercise!"

Of course, it isn't all in the mind, you have to do the physical work as well.

Goal setting and adopting the right method and type of training is important. Having goals, both short and long term, which are tangible, will help build self-confidence through purpose and achievement. Both the goal and method of training have to be realistic and suitable to your capabilities to avoid failure and a negative impact on your psychological state.

Lots of research shows that exercise is generally associated with positive mental health through improving how we feel, with a positive impact on our lifestyle. The same research and studies show that making time for exercise provides serious mental benefits. One of the characteristics of successful people in life is self-belief. Regardless of the task, the psychological mindset needs to be positive and focused on completing that task, whether it be a 10 mile run or a 15 min power walk. A negative mindset will impact upon your success regardless of your physical condition.

Anxiety, stress and your emotional state will play a major role in your physical and mental performance.

Stress can be expressed in different ways but if you are unable to control it, it will almost always affect your mental and physical health. Equally, taking regular exercise can reduce your stress levels.

It is important to acknowledge & develop the psychological attributes or reasons influencing the need for change, which is often easier said than done. Both the goal and method of training have to be realistic and suitable to the individual’s capabilities to avoid failure and a negative impact on their psychological state.

Our uniqueness requires each individual to come to terms with reasons for any physiological adaptations and our mental resolve needs to be committed to the change based on who we are as individuals and not governed by external pressures from our peers, the media or any other external factors.
