Don't get me wrong, I love eating cake. That gets me excited. Just the other day at Wagamama I opted for the three-cake dessert so I could have as much as possible.

But wedding cakes are altogether different; the taste is secondary to the way it looks. Your wedding cake is part of the decorations for the big day. And I've been finding it really difficult to be all that interested in what a cake looks like - how many tiers, what sort of piping and flower arrangements there are. I just want to eat it.

Having said that, I guess that's the best bit of shopping for a wedding cake. Suppliers will make you as many samples as you want, within reason, of all different types of cake.

We went about shopping for our cake the best way I knew how - by recommendation from a friend (and trying lots of samples) and in the end we chose an independent cake maker near our wedding venue in Surrey.

She knew the venue, and the different flavours she offered were delicious. And a three-tier cake would have been enough for our guest numbers, but obviously we wanted enough left over for us, so we've gone for four - each of them a different flavour.

When it came to the design, we'd agreed on something fairly simple, so I chose a design she'd made for someone else. Yet I surprised myself when I started to customise it, making it unique to our wedding.

At least when it came down to it, I was interested enough to contribute to the design of the cake, and now it's ordered, and the tastings have stopped, the pre-wedding diet can start. Well...maybe I'll start it next week.
