Don’t panic, I’m not trying to rehome all this enchanting gang – only Summer, the dog on the front right of the photo.

Summer is a six year old Shar-Pei who came into the care of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home as her previous owner could not look after her any more. While at Battersea, she found kennel life stressful so she was taken into foster care by one of Battersea’s employees. She is sharing this home with six other dogs and a confident cat. Look at the cat sitting there – cool as a cucumber!

Summer is looking for a home with experienced owners who have, preferably, owned Shar-Peis before. If this could be you, contact Battersea on 0843 509 4444 or see www.battersea.org.uk.

To help fill the children’s summer holidays, here are two exciting outings to consider. Firstly, to celebrate the birthday of Prince George, Battersea are hosting a Kitten Shower. On Thursday, July 24, a host of activities will be on offer in their London cattery. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet kittens in a kitten crèche.

They can also name new arrivals and take part in children’s arts, crafts and games. Entry is limited and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Sessions start at 10.30am and 2pm. Tickets £5. The Home is at Battersea Park Rd SW8 4AA.

Secondly, on Sunday July 20 (12 noon-5pm), The Mayhew Animal Home is holding their annual Summer Open Day. For one day only, the charity closes the road outside the centre to host an array of stalls. A steel band adds to the carnival atmosphere. There will be a bouncy castle, children’s activities and the opportunity to meet the Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officers and Vet Clinic team. The Mayhew is at Trenmar Gardens, Kensal Green NW10 6BJ. Admission £3. Children £2. Details from 020 8206 5875.
