Goodman   26 Maddox Street Mayfair W1S 1HQ 020 7499 3776

VEGETARIANS should stay away from Goodman, as this place was strictly for meat-lovers only.

As my sister Fleur and I deliberated over the menu, the waiter brought over a platter of uncooked steak to explain the different cuts of meat on offer. Before going to the restaurant, to me a steak was just a steak, but I now realise there's much more to it than that.

We decided to pick two starters and share both, as everything on the menu looked so delicious.

My sister chose the baked oysters with spinach, and I went for the herring with mustard.

The seafood seemed very fresh, and both dishes were devoured within a matter of minutes. I found the mustard a little overpowering to go with the herring, but the fish went beautifully with the bread and butter laid out on the side.

Moving on to the restaurant's speciality, the steak appeared enormous when it arrived on the table. My sister had gone for the rib-eye with

Bearnaise sauce, while I went for fillet with pepper sauce.

When they arrived, the steaks were cooked perfectly to our medium-rare specifications.

The meat was tender and had a flame-grilled taste, as though it had just come off a barbecue.

We'd also chosen side dishes of chunky chips and spinach.

Just before we dug into the mountains of meat before us, I was delighted when the waiter asked if we wanted any ketchup - which to me is a bare essential to go with steak and chips. Both plates were empty very quickly. With just a little more room in our rapidly expanding stomachs, we decided to share a dessert.

From a very tempting selection, we chose the apple tart with cinnamon ice cream which was easily large enough for two.

It was the perfect end to the meal, and I will definitely be going back.
