Prepare the crumble by rubbing together the buttery topping with your fingertips.

The idea is that the flour and sugar are combined in loose crumbs so that on cooking the hot melting butter cooks the other ingredients.

For the crumbs, then, rub together 50 g of butter , diced, and 100 grams of a mixture of half-and-half ground almonds and plain floor, and 100 grams of sugar. Put the crumble aside, then take three cored and peeled cooking apples and cook for just ten minutes in a saucepan with a big lump of butter and 80 g of sugar, and add half a pound of blackberries (250g) at the last minute.

Pour the whole mixture into an ovenproof dish and sprinkle on the crumby topping which will go crunchy and nutty eventually.
Put the dish in a medium oven  and cook for 30-40 minutes, aiming for the topping to go golden brown. Eat with cream, and enjoy the freebie.
