Pupils employed their artistic skills to promote road safety across Harrow.

School children from Nower Hill High School in George V Ave, Pinner, were working on an art project over Road Safety Week last month, set by Harrow Council to boost awareness and reduce incidents.

The students came up with the idea of running a competition to design new oyster card holders and hundreds of entries were received.

Dan Paton, art teacher at Nower Hill High School who helped with the design of the oyster card holders, said: “The students received a good level of road safety education prior to producing the art work which is evident in the final products.

"The idea was to come up with designs that would promote pedestrian safety near roads, with particular focus on the many distractions that are faced, including being preoccupied with friends, mobile devices or personal stereos.”

Eight winning designs were chosen which all provided top tips on crossing roads safely, paying attention and ensuring ear phones do not get in the way of keeping safe.

Leader of the council and cabinet member for community safety and environment, Councillor Susan Hall (Conservative) said: “It is fantastic to see our young people taking road safety so seriously and helping others understand the dangers. We have strong partnerships with schools and our road safety team do a brilliant job engaging with and teaching children and young people how to stay safe on the roads.”
