When Anupam Sharad weighed 18 stone in January, his GP told him he'd developed Type 2 diabetes because of his weight.

But according to the Greenford telecommunications manager, he reversed his diagnoses by shedding six stone in just four months.

Mr Sharad, who lives on King's Avenue in Ealing , had to start taking the diabetic medication metformin in January but was determined to lose weight to fend off his condition.

And by adopting a diet assigned by weight loss organisation LighterLife, the married dad-of-one saw his condition go into remission and by March he had stopped taking medication altogether, followed by the all-clear.

The 39-year-old said: "I was carrying that weight for five years, and I did not realise it would be that serious because there was never diabetes in my family, so when the doctor said I was diabetic I knew I had to lose weight.

“When I was in my 30s, my weight seemed to creep up on me and I didn’t notice a thing.

"I felt very tired throughout the day and I struggled with normal day to day activities.

"On public transport I always felt sleepy, especially in the mornings when the average person felt the most energised.

"Soon, doing the things I loved like badminton and cricket became very hard to manage. I was in no way fit enough to do any form of exercise so my health took a massive nose dive.

“When my GP told me I had developed Type 2 Diabetes I knew that I needed to do something about my weight."

By May, Mr Sharad's weight had dropped to 12 stone, and has remained so ever since. He admits it wasn't easy but his daily diet of an energy bar, shakes and soup was the key to his weight loss.

He also attended counselling sessions provided by LighterLife, using a cognitive behavioural therapist to combat urges to eat junk food.

Mr Sharad also said shedding the weight has brought a smile to the face of his wife, Suchita, and his 11-year-old daughter, Suhani.

He added: "People around me were encouraging me quite a lot, my wife was very supportive with me.

"For me, the LighterLife group support was the biggest help. I enjoyed talking to new people who were going through the same process as me which helped keep me motivated.

"It was also very educational, as I learnt which foods are good and which I should stay away from eating."
