A man is to be sentenced for sexual assault thanks to an Ealing judo player who chased him down in his socks and performed a citizen's arrest.

Jason Bertin left police officers astounded when he chased after the assailant before tackling him, placing him in a submission lock and bringing him back to the scene of the crime on Boxing Day last year.

The 28-year-old , who has lived in West Ealing for more than two years, told getwestlondon he was at home asleep on the couch when he became aware of the crime being committed.

He said he awoke to hear a woman screaming loudly outside his home.

'I woke up to some serious screaming'

Jason Bertin injured his feet so much he couldn't walk for days after the arrest

Mr Bertin said: "I was sleeping on my couch and I woke up to some serious screaming, I looked out the window and I saw a lady screaming and a man running off."

The part time bouncer then gave chase wearing only his socks, a T-shirt and jeans.

He ran into an estate cleaner who was also looking for the suspect, prompting the duo to get in Mr Bertin's car and search the area.

He added: "I started chasing after him and I did not have time to put my trainers on so I ran down in my socks and I got to the steps.

"I had got to the steps and I started running, I got to the corner of the park and I saw a caretaker, but the guy was young and fit so had a head start.

"So I said let's go and get my car and that's when the chase turned into a driving chase."

Ashi Waza judo throw

After the cleaner recognised the the man outside the Co-operative bank in New Broadway, Ealing, Mr Bertin leapt from his car and performed an 'Ashi Waza' - a judo move used to take down an opponent.

The move, learned during his time at the Hanwell Community Centre, involves bringing an opponent to the floor by sweeping their leg around them.

Jason Bertin, who has a black belt in judo, chased after a man to perform a citizen's arrest

Mr Bertin, who couldn't walk for days after the incident, then put him in the back of his car and returned him to police at the scene of the crime.

He added: "When I saw him I just pulled up on the pavement and I just got out of the car and told him 'you're under arrest'.

"I used to do judo so I knew how to do takedowns. I used my left hand to grab his right arm, then right hand holding his collar, right leg behind his then I pushed forward with my arms and pulled his leg back.

"He fell to the ground and then I had him in a submission lock.

"When I pulled up outside my house the police were outside with the lady and they did not see him in the back until he hopped out.

"They were quite astounded."
