Christmas is here once more, and with it comes festive-themed sandwiches hitting the shelves. Our reporter John Shammas finds out which is most deserving of your cash.

We have four contenders hailing from high street juggernauts looking to claim the big prize of the tastiest Christmas sandwich.

They are: TESCO, Greggs, Pret A Manager and Marks and Spencer.

We will put them each to the test, judging on taste, festiveness and price. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's eat some Christmas sandwiches.

Name: Greggs

Price: £3.05

What's in it? Brie, bacon and cranberry served hot in a baguette

First up is Greggs' offering of a baguette stuffed with brie, bacon and cranberry which is sure to warm you up on these cold Christmas evenings. No doubt it does the job, but it is the least festive of our selection with a measly spot of cranberry to remind you it is Christmas. A dry if not endearing experience.

Name: Pret A Manger

Price: £3.60

What's in it? Turkey, cranberry sauce, fruity stuffing and crispy onions on wholemeal bread

A crunchy pork and apricot stuffing with crispy onions and a delightful cranberry and port sauce makes this a firm favourite this Christmas. The contents are not daring, but by playing it safe Pret A Manager have delivered a memorable treat. Bit on the pricey side though.

Name: Marks and Spencer

Price: £2.50

What's in it: Spiced plum ham and festive chutney

Fortune may favour the brave, however Marks and Spencer's have overdone it this year with their spiced plum ham and festive chutney sandwich. The stuffing resembles something of a mince pie, and consumers will find it difficult to prepare for this surreal experience. A bold choice, and we applaud them for trying something different, but it did not quite work this time.

Name: TESCO

Price: £2.60

What's in it? A deluge of turkey and sausage accompanied with sage and onion stuffing

TESCO serve up meat and lots of it in a mammoth triple-sandwich which is sure to leave you full if not unfulfilled. No risks are taken: this is merely an all-year-round meat feast in festive packaging and TESCO need to have a long look in the mirror before they plot for next year's Christmas sandwich. A miserable outing.

And the results are in...

Gold: Pret A Manger

Silver: Greggs

Bronze: Marks and Spencer

Wooden Spoon: TESCO

Pret A Manager take the coveted prize with a sandwich that oozed the class that you would expect of a £3.60 sandwich, although Greggs' festive baguette comes in a close second while Marks and Spencer and TESCO are left licking their wounds.

Well done to all the competitors – I am already looking forward to next year.
