Excited crowds gathered to see a high street lit up as Christmas celebrations get under way.

Shops along The Broadway in Stanmore celebrated turning on their beautiful festive lights on Thursday last week.

Raj Degamia, who runs The Balloon and Party Shop and is the chair of the Stanmore Chamber of Trade, said: “We are absolutely delighted that all of our hard work has finally paid off and that as a Chamber of Trade our dream has been realised.”

The towering 20ft tree at the junction linking the area’s three main shopping roads will later be joined by eleven other trees which will also be complimented by Christmas-themed illuminations.

Mr Degamia made it his priority to light up Stanmore's streets this Christmas when he became the chairman of the Chamber of Trade in July, and thanked the council for their help in making it happen.

Council leader Councillor Susan Hall said: "Our Conservative administration is delighted to support initiatives such as this, which are enormous helpful to local businesses and traders by making our town centres more attractive and vibrant places to shop.

"I'd like to congratulate the Stanmore Chamber of Trade for their efforts in organising this."
