TWO authors have inspired children with tales of derring-do and self-belief.

Matt Dickinson, writer of Mortal Chaos, was at Northwood School to tell pupils about an inspirational journey he made to the summit of Mount Everest and the human qualities required for such a challenging environment.

The year seven group had completed a writing and drawing task relating to Mr Dickinson’s thriller prior to his visit. The winners were presented with book vouchers and art equipment.

At Whiteheath Junior School, in Ruislip, Kia Garriques urged children to write about their own passions. She referred to Ian Fleming, who began his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in January 1952, saying he was not afraid to ignore what was expected at the time.

The fantasy novel writer said: “We should encourage young people to use their creativity and imagination when writing, even if their ideas are not popular with the majority.”

Her first book, Innovera Yakov: The Journey of a Thousand Eyes, was published a year ago.
