An artist, with more than 700 paintings hanging in his Yiewsley home, is to put some of his works on display at a pop-up shop.

Steve Brooks, 56, will unveil The Joy of Painting on Tuesday (June 30).

He said: “The works in the shop are all my own, over the last 23 years, as a selection of everything I’ve done. But they're predominantly more recent, around the last nine to 10 years.”

Mr Brooks left his “pressurised” job in the city, as head of art at an agency, and started painting.

“My life has been totally devoted to art for a long time, it’s fantastic!" he told getwestlondon. "The only people who usually see or get my paintings are my friends, I let them have them for free.

“I have 700 paintings at mine at another 200 at my mum's! I’m always worried, God forbid, what if the place would burn down!

"I believe God has given us all talents and we should use them.”

Mr Brooks, who has lived in the West Drayton area for 53 years, has previously exhibited in St Margaret's Church, Uxbridge, in 1995 and Hayes market in 1997.

He had a desire for his work to be seen when he started out 23 years ago, but is now settled and just enjoys his work.

He said: “I think it’s more important to put more effort into work than just seeking somewhere to exhibit. As it’s not just a place to hang your work, it’s a part of your soul that’s up there.”

The methods he employs when painting are German impressionism and basic colour theory, he said. He also loves French expressionism.

When Mr Brooks did a foundation in art at Uxbridge College the teacher asked if he was on acid as his “paintings were so colourful”, he laughs.

Mr Brooks does a lot of collaborative work with his son, Luke, a fashion designer who has created pieces commissioned by Lady Gaga.

The shop's name, The Joy of Painting, is a tribute to the late artist Bob Ross, whom his son also tributes through his Instagram account.

He added: “We’re going to cover the whole shop in paper prints of the paintings this time, not just one wall.”

The Joy of Painting pop-up shop will be open from June 30-July 5, including the weekend, at 99 Morning Lane, Hackney, London, E9 6ND.
