Waitrose is due to open its first ever cashless shop in Hounslow this summer.

Customers will only be able to pay by card or their mobile devices at the branch, which is due to open this summer within Sky 's new HQ building in Osterley .

The retailer claims the outlet, where 20 jobs will be created, will be the first cashless store operated by one of the UK's major supermarket brands.

The Little Waitrose will feature five self-service checkouts for use by staff at the new Sky Central office block, which will accommodate more than 3,500 workers once it is completed this summer.

It will be only the second office-based store opened by the retailer - the previous one opened at British Airways' head office near Heathrow in 1998.

First of many?

The shelves will mostly stock evening meals or lunch items, with travel accessories and a mini health and beauty range among the other goods for sale.

Jackie Wharton, Waitrose convenience director, suggested it could be the first of many such stores should it prove a success.

"Opening on the Sky campus is an exciting opportunity for us to respond to how customers wish to shop in this flagship workplace setting," she said.

"Our convenience model is now more flexible than ever, especially as payment methods and ranges continue to evolve, so we'll look forward to exploring other opportunities like this in the future."
