Join like-minded stargazers for a series of special public observation nights at Ruislip Lido.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday (October 16-18), from 7pm-9pm, West of London Astronomical Society (WOLAS) are holding night-time events to observe the moon and stars through a wide variety of telescopes.

In addition to the moon, star clusters such as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters, coloured stars such as the Betelgeuse, double stars and distant galaxies such as the Andromeda Galaxy, may be seen by the telescopes of the society's astronomers... And if you're really quick, you could even catch a rare glimpse of the International Space Station!

The society's astronomers will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have about space and the stars.

Vice-president of WOLAS, David Arditti, said: "People, especially children, first shown the Moon through an astronomical telescope, often remember the experience for the rest of their lives.

"To see the razor-sharp, airless landscape, with its craters, great plains, mountains and rilles illuminated by the low Sun is something spectacular and unique.

"We have chosen some dates when the Moon will be well-placed for observing, but not so bright as to drown out the fainter objects in the sky. All we can do now is to hope for clear skies!"

Organisers suggest you bring warm clothing for the chilly night, and bring the whole family. The event is free of charge.

Please check the WOLAS website on the day for weather updates, as the event may be cancelled in adverse conditions.
