Love a good meal at a hotel, or escaping the kids for a night and enjoying a romantic stay somewhere local? Well, it might be a good idea to check the hygiene score first.

A dozen hotels and B&Bs across west London have received a score of two out of five or worse after recent inspections by the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Of the 12 establishments with low ratings, FIVE received scores of just one out of five, indicating that major steps to improve food hygiene must be taken.

Across the UK, 234 hotels and B&Bs received scores of under one out of five since their last inspection.

A total of 18 hotels in the UK received the lowest possible score - zero - including Mccreadie Hotel in Forest Hill, London.

What do the ratings mean?

According to the FSA, businesses, schools and hospitals are tested in three areas of food safety and hygiene:

  • How hygienically food is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
  • The cleanliness, layout, lighting and ventilation of the building

  • The systems in place to make sure food is safe for consumption

A "zero" rating is very poor, indicating urgent action must be taken to ensure the business stays open. A "five" is very good.
