Many of you were shocked when getwestlondon revealed that there were more than a dozen schools with poor food hygiene ratings in west London.

But you might be even more surprised to learn how many hospitals and caring facilities in west London also have low ratings.

More than a dozen hospitals, nurseries and caring premises across west London have received a score of two out of five or worse after recent inspections by the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Of the 16 establishments with low ratings, SIX received scores of just one out of five, indicating that major steps to improve food hygiene must be taken.

Across the UK, 215 caring and childcare premises received scores of under one out of five since their last inspection.

A total of six caring premises in the UK received the lowest possible score - zero - including Butterflies Childcare in Wimbledon .

What do the ratings mean?

According to the FSA, businesses, schools and hospitals are tested in three areas of food safety and hygiene:

  • How hygienically food is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
  • The cleanliness, layout, lighting and ventilation of the building

  • The systems in place to make sure food is safe for consumption

A "zero" rating is very poor, indicating urgent action must be taken to ensure the business stays open. A "five" is very good.
