Pantomime dames, hula hooping and a brass band will herald the launch of Hounslow's new expanded market this Saturday (December 6).

Shoppers can enjoy the festive entertainment as they browse stalls at the market, by Bell Corner, which is doubling in size.

Bargain hunters will get to meet comedy elves and take the 'goodometer' test to see if they've been naughty or nice this year, and there will be music from West London Brass.

Top hula hooper Angie Mack will show off her tricks and help you get your hips gyrating, while a pair of plump fairies and a musical pudding hand out chocolate coins.

The Ugly Sisters will dish out insults to their nemesis Cinderella and anyone else unlucky enough to cross their path, and a display of giant tulips will crop up at Bell Square.

The market will open at 9am on Saturday, and the entertainment will run from 10am to 6pm.

The new market will run from Tuesday to Friday in Bell Square and Tuesday to Saturday in the High Street.

Among the items on sale will be women's clothing and accessories, and hot and cold food. Seasonal gingerbread and confectionery will also be on offer over Christmas.

The market's launch has been timed to coincide with Small Business Saturday, on which shoppers are being encouraged to support businesses in their communities.

The High Street repaving has been paused over Christmas but is set to continue in the new year.

The first phase of the refurbishment, including the new square outside Holy Trinity Church, is scheduled for completion by March next year.

Consultation on the second phase, including a new cycle lane along the eastern strip of the High Street, took place earlier this year.

The council says the cost of the first phase is now £3.5 million, including approximately £2.75m from the Mayor of London.

The council previously said phase one of the project would cost £2.75m in total, including its contribution and that from the mayor.

Councillor Sue Sampson, cabinet member for economic development, said: "The High Street is now being radically improved and the market will now open on Small Business Saturday and in time for Christmas.

"It will breathe new life into Hounslow as a shopping centre and, with performances and entertainment throughout the day, it will be a fun and vibrant new shopping destination drawing visitors from far and wide."
