Heathrow Airport is preparing to launch its month-long Whisky Festival across all its terminals at the end of April.

As the highest selling beverage with 1.1 million bottles sold at the airport every year, passengers will be able to enjoy a tipple during the annual whisky experience while learning more about the spirit too.

The four week whirlwind whisky experience will take off on April 27 until May 25, with experts on hand to introduce people to some of the 300 plus whiskies on sale from travel exclusives by renowned distillers to premium single malt brands in shades of amber, yellow and gold.

To celebrate the occasion Heathrow has teamed up with fashion designer Giles Deacon, who dresses celebrities including Drew Barrymore and Kate Moss, to offer limited edition handcrafted whisky stones which are a substitute to ice cubes, along with a pouch, for customers who spend £70 or more on whisky at its World Duty Free stores.

Mr Deacon who made his name designing for luxury brands such as the Gucci Group catapulted into the fashion pages of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar in 2004 and his lines picked up by retailers including Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

Mr Deacon said: “I’m a huge fan of whisky and particularly enjoy sipping on Japanese blends whenever I travel, so what better way to keep my drink cool than to add a couple of hand crafted whisky stones to my tumbler.

"The inspiration for my design came from a print inspired by the Victorian textile designer and writer William Morris. I love the idea that passengers can take a little inspiration from British history with them on their travels from Britain’s most iconic airport.”

Passengers travelling to the US, India and China are the most likely to pick up a bottle of the spirit when travelling through the airport, according to Heathrow.

Meanwhile, it is scotch whisky that accounts for a quarter of UK food and drink exports, generating £4 billion for the economy.

Jonathan Coen, Heathrow’s retail director said: “Whisky has become increasingly popular in recent years. Whether you’re a fan of the classic whisky advertisements of the sixties or simply love an Old Fashioned cocktail from time to time, we’re proud to stock a diverse range of whisky across our terminals.

“From Scotch, bourbon or single malt varieties, there’s something for everyone, and for anyone struggling to make up their minds, our expert tasters will be on hand to offer passengers advice on how best to enjoy this iconic British drink.”

Fred Creighton, managing director at World Duty Free, added: “We have some exceptional whiskies this year including Bruichladdich The Laddie Eight and Glenmorangie The Tayne and our expert staff, along with Master Blenders from various distilleries, will be on hand to meet customers and help them discover more about this celebrated spirit!”
