A runner from Hanwell is training to take on her first marathon for Barnardo's, which found a loving home for her father when he was a baby.

Clare Mathieu moved to Green Lane in Hanwell last year after more than a decade living in Northfields, and in that time has completed the Ealing Half Marathon several times.

Now the 35-year-old has been inspired to attempt the full 26.2-mile distance of the London Marathon to help raise money for the 150-year-old children's charity.

Clare said: "Barnardo's has always held a special place in my heart as my father was put into their care as a new-born baby in 1946.

"Fortunately he was swiftly adopted and had a very happy upbringing, but it's vital that the charity's good work can continue.

"My father never felt the need to go and search for his biological parents and he's very grateful that he was adopted by two wonderful, caring people who provided him with a good home."

Winning a place in the London Marathon fulfils a long-time ambition for Clare, who is now training hard with long runs along the River Brent tow paths.

Clare said: "I've entered the London marathon ballot for the last five years and haven't ever been successful so I thought that as this year is Barnardo's 150 anniversary, it's a good opportunity to run for the charity and raise some money for a good cause."

Clare has already raised more than £2,200 and hopes to break the £2,500 barrier before the event.

She will also set up a fundraising market stall in the garden of the Fox pub in Green Lane, Hanwell, on the afternoon of Saturday April 9, when she will sell chilli jam and other homemade goods.

Lynn Gradwell, director of Barnardo's in London, said: "It's fantastic that Clare has chosen to run for us and I'd like to thank her for raising these vital funds, which will help us make sure many more children and young people are able to enjoy the best start in life."
