Hillingdon can boast the best parks in the country, after winning a total of 47 Green Flag awards.

That puts it above all other local authority areas, not just in the capital, but in the country.

It is also the greenest borough in London, with over 200 parks and green spaces dotted around the borough.

Green Flag awards are handed out to the very best parks in the country by a group of environmental charities including Keep Britain Tidy.

The award scheme has also been opened up internationally, and Hillingdon is the current world leader in the number of Green Flag parks.

While Hillingdon retained the 42 Green Flags it had won previously, it expanded its trophy cabinet with a further five new Green Flag parks.

Parks that were awarded a Green Flag for the first time include Coney Green in Hillingdon, The Gravel Pitts in Northwood, Long Meadow in Eastcote, Cherry Lane Cemetery in Hayes and Southlands Arts Centre in West Drayton.

Eastcote House is another Green Flag winner

Councillor Jonathan Bianco, cabinet member for finance, property and business services, said: “Green Flags are the highest accolade a park can receive and they require a great deal of time and hard work to achieve.

“To not only retain all the Green Flags we’ve achieved over the years but to keep increasing our total, is a staggering achievement of which everyone involved can feel incredibly proud.

“I would like to commend the efforts of the council teams who look after the parks, as well as the community groups and volunteers who make it possible for us to maintain such a high standard.

“With summer in full swing, I encourage everyone to get out and explore the green spaces we have on our doorsteps.”
