This year's Prudential RideLondon 100-mile cycle ride is expected to attract close to 25,000 participants - and bring major disruption to the streets of London on August 9 and 10.

People along the route or travelling through Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham, or Hounslow are likely to experience some disruption from road closures over the weekend.

Amateur cyclists will get on their saddles to take part in the Ride London-Surrey 100, on a route that goes through the three boroughs on its way from the Olympic Park to Surrey and back. And it will be followed by a professional competitors race.

A Kensington and Chelsea Council spokesman said: "Many residents underestimated the impact Prudential RideLondon had last year so we are urging people to plan ahead and make alternative arrangements if necessary."

K&C will suspend all planned works on major roads throughout the borough to help accommodate the displaced traffic, but still warns of heavy congestion. Cyclists will enter Kensington and Chelsea at Knightsbridge and travel along the A4 before entering Hammersmith and Fulham. They come back via King's Road, Ashburnham Road, Cremorne Road, Cheyne Walk and Chelsea Embankment before finishing on The Mall. Surrounding roads will also be shut.

Brompton and Cromwell Roads will close at 5am on Sunday and is not expected to re-open until around 3pm. Kings Road, Cheyne Walk and Chelsea Embankment are expected to close between 7.30am-7pm.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is advising people to use public transport, walk or cycle, and avoid driving in area on the Sunday. The Hammersmith flyover will be closed for the event, and other well-used routes such as Kings Road, New Kings Road and Talgarth Road. The council advises people living in the south of the borough that local vehicle access is only possible over Wandsworth Bridge. Kings Road and New Kings Road will be closed.

The council's transport boss Victoria Brocklebank-Fowler said: “Last year we know many people were seriously inconvenienced by the traffic disruption, despite repeated advanced warnings. We hope the organisers have learned from last year's event and can ease the disruption for our residents.”

Roads in Hounslow affected by closure include Hogarth Roundabout and Chiswick Bridge. Other bridges to be closed include Vauxhall, Westminster, Battersea, Chelsea and Albert Bridges. The route will see cyclists travel over Putney Bridge, which has been closed to motorists since last month for essential repair work.
