January is well and truly underway, with wild and windy days darkening our spirits, but luckily it also signals the start of the big Hollywood awards season.

Kicking off with the Golden Globes this weekend, we will be able to look on as the A-listers take to the red carpets in all their finery before awards season begins. But who will win? Is your money on Redmayne or Blanchett?

So when are the big events of 2016 taking place? This is what we know so far...

Golden Globes

Eddie Redmayne at the 2015 Golden Globe awards

Where? Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills.

When? Sunday January 10

Can I watch it on TV in the UK? Tune in to E! channel from 11pm to watch the live red carpet action.

Who will be there? British funnyman Ricky Gervais is returning for hosting duties and he's thrilled to learn that Mel Gibson, who he previously made jokes about while he hosted the show on three consecutive occasions, is confirmed as a presenter along with Olivia Wilde.

As for the nominees, Eddie Redmayne - who swept up the Best Actor awards across the board last year for The Theory of Everything - is on the shortlist again for The Danish Girl. He will compete with Will Smith (Concussion); Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs); Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) and Bryan Cranston (Trumbo).

Cate Blanchett is in the running for Best Actress for Cate and her fellow nominees are Brie Larson (Room); Rooney Mara (Carol); Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl).

Films in contention are Carol, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, Room and Spotlight.

Last year's big winners? Eddie Redmayne (Best Actor), Julianne Moore (Best Actress) and Boyhood (Drama).

Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG)

Jennifer Aniston at the 2015 Screen Actors Guild Awards

Where? Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles

When? Saturday January 30

Can I watch it on TV in the UK? The SAG Awards red carpet pre-show will be streamed live at sagawards.org

Who will be there? These awards recognise both film and prime-time TV.

Eddie Redmayne will be pulling on his best suit again. The Best Actor shortlist (film) is similar to the Golden Globes except Will Smith is replaced by Johnny Depp for Black Mass.

Dame Helen Mirren is the British hopeful in the Best Actress category for Woman In Gold and Michael Sheen's other half, Sarah Silverman, is shortlisted for I Smile Back.

As far as TV is concerned, we have two Welsh hopefuls as both Iwan Rheon and Tom Cullen are included in the nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series - Downton Abbey (Cullen) and Game of Thrones (Rheon).

Last year's big winners? Eddie Redmayne and Julianne Moore did it again.

British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs)

Kensington-born Benedict Cumberbatch and wife Sophie Hunter at the 2015 BAFTA awards

Where? Royal Opera House in London

When? Sunday February 14

Can I watch it on TV in the UK? Details to be revealed but it is usually shown 'as live' on the BBC.

Who will be there? There will, of course, be some big names from Hollywood, but the Baftas is mainly a celebration of the British film industry so look out for our much-loved stars like Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen et al among the audience.

The nominees will be announced at 7.35am on Friday January 8 live on the website at www.bafta.org

Last year's big winners? As with the Golden Globes, Boyhood was Best Film, while Eddie Redmayne lifted the Best Actor trophy and Julianne Moore was Best Actress.

Academy Awards

Actress Julianne Moore at the 2015 Academy Awards

Where? Dolby Theater, Hollywood

When? Sunday February 28

Can I watch it on TV in the UK? No details yet but you can usually catch the ceremony itself on Sky Movies.

Who will be there? Anyone who is anyone in Tinseltown will be there for the daddy of the awards season - the Academy Awards or Oscars as they are known.

And even if they're not taking seats inside the Dolby Theater for the awards themselves they'll be attending a host of parties before and after the big event.

From Brangelina to Madonna and from Tom Cruise to Taylor Swift you can pretty much expect the top A-listers to turn up at some point.

So far we know that the 2016 Oscars will be hosted by Chris Rock but the nominees are yet to be announced - that is happening on Thursday January 14. However, you can safely bet that some of the names from the Golden Globes lists will make it onto the shortlist. Good luck Eddie!

Last year's big winners? Julianne Moore and Eddie Redmayne won the main acting gongs but Birdman was named Best Film.
