Bonfire Night is just over a week away and it's the night we enjoy fireworks and food with friends and family as we watch the skies light up.

But we must not forget why we mark November 5, which was the night in 1605 when Guy Fawkes tried and failed to blow up the Houses of Parliament with his infamous Gunpowder Plot.

It's become a tradition for people to make their own Guys to put on bonfires and if you fancy having a go at making your own guy here's what you need to do.

  1. First you will need some old men's clothes. If you can find an old pair of trousers, jacket and shirt or a pair of pyjamas may also work.
  2. You need a body and some legs - an old feather pillow will make a great body for your Guy and you want to be careful not to use any materials that could burn and give off hazardous fumes, so avoid plastics and synthetic products.
  3. Then to create arms tie the end of the shirt sleeves with string. Stuff the sleeves of the shirt tightly with old clothes, old towels, bedding or newspaper. Do the same to create legs. Tie the end of the trousers with string and pack your stuffing in as tightly as you can.
  4. For the head - one way is to stuff an old cushion cover or pillow case into a shape that resembles a head. Tie it tightly with a very long piece of string which is long enough that you can use the string to tie it around the Guy’s body under his jacket.
  5. Once you have tied everything together, don't forget to draw on Guy's face. Then add other finishing touches including a scarf, hat, straw or an old wig for hair and you’re ready to show off your guy.
