This Friday (April 10) the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) is running it's own alternative to the annual Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.

Now in its second year, the Alternative Boat Race aims to raise awareness of the round-the-clock rescue work that the RNLI operate on the Thames.

The race, which kicks off at at 5.30pm, involves 250 miniature lifeboats sailing down the Thames.

All funds raised from the event will be going towards the RNLI's important work.

The competition is due to be fierce, the weather beautiful, and the event will not be without a famous face or two! Olympic sailing broadcaster Hannah White will be there on the day to commentate.

The race will take place along the final stretch of the traditional boat race route, from Barnes Bridge to Chiswick Bridge.

A spokesman for the event said: "The competition will be intense, but it’s going to be worth every moment!"

So, if you'd like to build up some excitement for the traditional race on Saturday (April 11), make sure to head down and support the RNLI.
