Westminster Abbey is to host its first ever catwalk in June to showcase the new Gucci collection.
The London fashion show will be the first ever to host an event of this kind at the abbey, which has been the home of world famous marriages and funerals, including the Duke of Duchess of Cambridge.
In an unprecedented move, the abbey accepted the decision, although the agreement was not met with glee from all in the clergy.
A spokesperson told getwestlondon the reaction from the clergy was "broadly supportive".
But Reverend Peter Owen-Jones told The Independent: “I think it’s part of the Disneyfication of all the traditional sacred spaces in this land.
"It confuses what the church is for. Is the central icon of Christianity there to offer spiritual sustenance and love or is it just part of the marketplace of capitalism."
The pre-spring/summer 2017 collection is headed up by creative director Alessandro Michele, who was behind the selection of the historic building.
In a statement from the brand, they wrote: "Creative director has chosen one of London's most historic and beautiful settings for his cruise 2017 fashion show: the Cloisters at Westminster Abbey.
"Gucci will be the first fashion house to host a runway show in this historic location."
Last month, the building was one of the venues to have multi-coloured lights projected on its exterior as part of London's first light show, Lumiere .
